We influence other people. Obvious or not? It may be obvious, and yet we don't always seem to realize it. When we walk through the world of everyday life, we primarily see one perspective: our own. We may perceive other people, but mostly only as part of our world. We react to them and their influence on us, but then we usually stop thinking about them.

The title may sound negative at first, but I bet you'll feel encouraged after reading it. We humans have a certain weakness for goals. Goals not only sound motivating, they also show that we know what we want. We are only too happy to measure our success by them, whether at work or in our private lives. “If you don't have goals, you're wasting your time.” “If you don't achieve your goals, you don't have enough discipline.”

We often think about the big things in life. The career we're working towards. The partnership we've wanted for years. Finally taking up a hobby that fulfills us. The list can be long. Although long-term goals and wishes can be a good guide for the future, we often overlook the little things in life that are right in front of us - and massively underestimate what they can give us.

Who hasn't experienced it - the inner voice in your head that says “I should be doing this now” or “I shouldn't be doing that now”? The word “should” plays a special role for us humans, usually a much bigger role than we initially think. I would even venture to say that we Germans in particular, who are almost infatuated with rules, have a special fondness for “should”.
